Trojans, worms and viruses
What are trojans, worms and viruses?
A trojan is a piece of software that appears to be something useful or fun, such as a free game or screen saver. In reality, the trojan, which can include keylogging software, can damage your computer, steal private data, give other people access to the computer or spread a virus.
A worm is a computer program that attempts to copy itself wherever it can, slowing down internet speeds. Some worms allow criminals to use your computer to deliver spam on their behalf, for financial gain or their entertainment.
Viruses can damage your computer, steal information and spread themselves to other computers.
How can I prevent infection?
Viruses are transmitted by email, through software downloads or when you are surfing the web. Trojans usually hide in software. Worms take advantage of any weakness in your computer’s operating system. As there are many ways that your computer can be infected, it’s vital to install good anti-virus software and keep your operating system up to date.
Internet service providers sometimes provide their own anti-virus software. There are many commercial versions that can address new viruses and trojans as they are created.
What happens if my computer is infected?
If your computer is infected, source some good anti-virus software from a reputable software manufacturer. Scan your entire system and leave the software running whenever you use the computer. The best software will remove old infections and prevent new ones from taking hold.
